Her real name is Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson… but you can call her Tove Lo! She’s very proud of her title of “Sweden’s darkest pop export.” That’s because she’s not ashamed to show the messy side of love! Which, strangely, also earned her another title as “the saddest girl in Sweden.”
She’s wild, raw, emotional, unpredictable, and we’re totally digging it. Her song, Habits, took all of us by surprise with powerful lyrics and the palpable pain in her voice. No one really likes to admit just how badly a breakup can affect them… until now.
She first got her musical start in 2006 when she formed the band Tremblebee, which didn’t work out. So, she began focusing on her songwriting talents and was signed in 2011 by Warner/Chappell Music, where she wrote songs for Alesso, Flume, Nick Jonas, Seven Lions, Broods, Urban Cone and Coldplay. She also wrote Ellie Goulding’s smash-hit song from 50 Shades of Grey, “Love Me Like You Do.”
Later, she connected her with hit-maker Max Martin. He signed her a couple years later and she dropped her first album, Queen of the Clouds, which opened at #14 on the Billboard Charts. Yep, that’s the album that had “Habits.”
Habits was dubbed a sleeper hit because it took so long to reach the top of the charts.
Tove Lo then came out with her follow-up album, Lady Wood, which dropped in 2016. It reached #11 on the Billboard 200. Her most recent album, Blue Lips, didn’t attain the same success as her previous two albums but it did contain an interesting array of songs.
As for what she’s brewing up next… we just have to wait and see!
