Becoming a famous band isn’t something you’d expect to come out of Craigs' List. But that’s exactly how Capital Cities was formed. It was a long journey to being a band though. Ryan Merchant answered an advertisement for production services on the website. He and the ad’s poster, Sebu Simonian, met and started to produce commercial jingles. They had musical skills to begin with, so three years later the duo finally began to write music for themselves.
“Safe and Sound” is the song that made Capital Cities famous. It is their leading single off the 1st and only album they ever released, In a Tidal Wave of Mystery. The song was featured in a lot of different media: commercials, TV shows, film previews, etc. I think that shows how much people latched onto it. It’s a very catchy song, and is appealing to a lot of different people. The song was number 8 on the Billboard top 200 at one point too.
The band has mostly been touring since their big rise to success last year. Stopping by lots of summer festivals and they even joined Katy Perry on her Prismatic tour this past spring. They just announced their own Fall tour and will be playing in New York City around Halloween.
The music video for “Safe and Sound” is really cool. It even got nominated for best music video at the 2014 Grammy Awards. Definitely worth watching.
