I first discovered Lana Del Rey like the rest of the world, from the internet. I was on a random music site and they had a youtube video of a song called "Video Games" from a young singer I had never heard of. Being a music nerd, I had to see what the hype was about. The song had me hooked 30 seconds in. The use of the harp got me. Beautiful instrument. The video was really cool too. It was vintage mixed with current clips of kids skateboarding and the infamous LA hotel, The Chateau Marmont. But who exactly was this mystery artist?
Lana Del Rey is a 27 year old singer/songwriter from New York City. Her real name is Elizabeth Grant. She has been writing songs since she was eighteen and in 2007 released a digital album titled Lana Del Rey a.k.a Lizzy Grant. The song that scored her recognition was "Video Games." The video went viral with over 20 million views, and Lana took advantage of that. Less than a year later her album Born To Die was released. It was the fifth best selling album in 2012, pretty impressive!
Lana writes her own songs, can play the guitar and is very active with the making of the videos she releases. Her music has been labeled "cinematic" and is known for pop culture references, especially from the decades of the 50's and 60's. She wrote a song that was feature on the soundtrack for The Great Gatsby. It's called "Young and Beautiful" and fits with the film so well! You can view it on iTunes. Some of Lana's musical influences are: Elvis Presley, Amy Winehouse, Britney Spears, Bruce Springsteen and Nirvana. Her voice and range is very distinct which is another reason I was drawn to her music. Below you can listen to a quick interview she did about her song/video "Video Games." What do you think of Lana Del Rey's music?
