Jack Johnson was supposed to follow in the footsteps of his famous surfer father - Jeff Johnson, until a surfing competition accident sent him to the hospital. He had to get over 100 stitches and lost a few teeth. He had an inherent talent for the sport, learning how to surf when he was only 5 years old. But he also had a talent for music at the same time, and his surfing accident actually inspired him to begin making music
He grew up in Hawaii, learned how to play the guitar when he was 8 years old, and then learned songwriting when he was only 12. It wasn’t until he started playing in a band in college did he realize he wanted to be a professional musician. He released his first album, Brushfire Fairytales in 2001. This was a very popular album for him and did very well. He has since released 5 albums after that and has gone on numerous tours. His song “Upside Down” was featured in the Curious George movie in 2006 and sold 1,000,000 copies in the U.S.
Jack Johnson’s music can be described as soft-rock. He incorporates a lot of acoustic guitar and a lot of other instruments like ukeleles, harmonicas, and bongo drums. His major influence on his music is Bob Dylan, but Jack also says he thinks Jimi Hendrix is the best guitarist of all time.
He still calls Hawaii his home and got married to his college sweetheart in 2000. They have three children together. He is on a world tour this summer. Most of his U.S. dates are sold out though. His fans love his live shows. That’s why he tours so much.
