Iggy Azalea had two of the hottest songs this summer-Problem and Fancy, but it’s been a long journey for her to achieve that. When she was a teenager, she dropped out of high school in Australia, saved up money by working as a hotel maid, and then moved to Miami, Florida on her own. She originally told her parents she was going on vacation, but planned on never returning. Since the U.S. is basically where hip hop was started, Iggy felt that it was the best place to be to start a music career.
Her real name is Amethyst Amelia Kelley, and she started rapping when she was 14. She actually started an all-girl hip hop group in her Australian childhood neighborhood, but stopped doing it because she was “the only serious one”. Her rise to fame in the states is a combination of reaching out to industry professionals and social media. She released mix tapes through major labels, but it was her videos on YouTube that actually brought her a lot of attention. She would upload videos of herself freestyling.
People have been waiting a long time for Iggy to release her first full-length album. She had been talked about since the beginning of her career in 2011. She also toured with Beyonce in 2013, which helped spread the word about her talent.
Her first album, The New Classic, was released this past April and it has done very well; especially her debut single, Fancy. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 list, and her song with Ariana Grande, Problem, was number two at the same time, which is something that only The Beatles have been able to accomplish.
Her music really is something to hear. Very interesting sound, and it’s pretty catchy rapping.
