She is the beautiful voice behind the chorus of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ song “Same Love”. Mary Lambert, a Seattle based singer-songwriter, was only just a bartender before she came on to the scene with the emotionally and socially conscious song. She actually wrote her part, the chorus, in a matter of 2 hours. The song brought her a lot of attention and earned her a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year.
Now Mary Lambert has come out on her own with her first solo album, Heart on My Sleeve. That album title is very appropriate because Mary is known to use her music as a platform for social issues. She is very heavily involved in the LGBQT community, and is outspoken about her own troubles growing up in a strict, and traditional household.
Her songs are poetic, probably because of her background as being a “spoken word” artist. That essentially means she performs poetry. It definitely shows in her music and also in her songwriting. Her music has been compared to a mix of James Blake, Tori Amos, and Adele.
“Secrets” is the leading single off her first solo album and it’s very fun, yet meaningful at the same time. Kind of like an upbeat personal anthem for her that can relate to many. Mary also just has a tremendous voice. Her natural talent combined with her ability to write such great songs, makes her an up and coming artist to definitely keep an eye on. She is performing in Hartford in February!
