Fans Can't Handle Doctor Who's First Female Doctor

What's next?  ACTUAL female doctors?  The horror!

The BBC basically broke the internet yesterday by announcing the first female Doctor (series protagonist) in franchise history.  Jodie Whittaker, who blew everyone's minds in Broadchurch, will play the 13th Doctor.

Peter Capaldi, who currently plays The Doctor, gave Whittaker his blessing:

“Anyone who has seen Jodie Whittaker’s work will know that she is a wonderful actress of great individuality and charm. She has above all the huge heart to play this most special part. She’s going to be a fantastic Doctor.”

Most fans reacted to the news with a ton of "can't evens" and "I'm crying and shaking."  After years of teasing the possibility of a female Doctor, fans are totally freaking out that the series actually "did that."  Even former Doctor Who greats stepped forward to offer their praise and support, such as Colin Baker, who, to this day, remains the most famous Doctor in show history.  He said it was about time something changed on the show and expressed his excitement for its future.

However, some fans just can't seem to wrap their minds around a woman taking over the role.  While some fans promise they'll keep their minds open, others are heralding this as the end of Doctor Who.

Author Aaron Gillies decided to turn some of his favorite angry comments into mock title cards.  So, if you need an illustration about the kind of deragatory comments directed at the show, here you go:

You can call it your run-of-the-mill sexism or you can say "my childhood!"  But, Whittaker is taking all comments in stride.

So, what do you think?  Are you a Doctor Who fan? How do you think casting a female-lead in the longest-running series in history will change the franchise?
