Trending This Week: New Beginnings After Heartbreak

Adventures of a Lifetime - Coldplay

Please take a seat, if you are standing because Chris Martin has said that the 7th Coldplay album, which comes out December 4th,  is their “final album”. WHATTTTTTT! NOOOOO. Does that mean Coldplay is breaking up or taking a break? What does it mean!? Chris Martin compared “A Head Full of Dreams” the last Harry Potter Book, but he also said “it doesn’t mean we won’t do anything else”. Okay phew- a little relief there, but STILL.

The first single off of “A Head Full of Dreams” is Adventures of a Lifetime. If this one song can give us any hint as to how the rest of the new album will sound, I think we are going to get some very happy music that is much different to anything else we’ve heard from Coldplay. I think it’s also a reflection of how Chris Martin is feeling nowadays. The release of their last album, Ghost Stories, was influenced by the breakdown of Chris’s marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow and the songs were much more melancholy compared to “Adventures of a Lifetime”.

I was actually a little surprised when I first heard this new song. It’s a very cool sound- very focused on the instruments and Chris Martin’s vocals sound like a weight has been lifted off of him.

Used To Love You - Gwen Stefani

This song is heavy. The first time I heard it was when I watched of video of her performing it at a California show, and boy, does Gwen really show her emotion through this song. Gwen has had a crazy year- she and her longtime husband, Gavin Rossdale got divorced, and now she’s dating her Voice costar Blake Shelton. This song sounds like a therapeutic experience for Gwen and I think a lot of people can relate to it.

I also like the song because I feel like Gwen sounds like her “No Doubt” days, in a very good way. Perhaps Gwen is getting back to her own identity and expressing her journey through music, which I think is what’s been missing from her sound in the past 2 years. It’s nice to see Gwen in the spotlight again and I hope we get more songs like “Used to Love You”.
