Music You Should Know - Are We Human or Are We Dancer

"We're raising a generation of dancers," said famous author Hunter S. Thompson.  So, which are you?

Rag'n'Bone Man - Human

Welcome to the music industry, Rags!  Talk about one heck of a debut single... it's nearing 300 million views on YouTube.  Because of that, he was named the British Breakthrough Act of 2017 at the BRIT Awards, an award that Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, and Oasis won,   He also took home the Critics Choice Award, again, something that Adele, Ellie Goulding, and James Bay all took home back in the day.  So, I have a feeling Rag N Bone has a major career ahead of him.

His real name is Rory Graham and he was raised on blues and folk music, which explains his rich and deep booming voice.  He then fell into hip hop when he turned 19, which modernized his entire approach to music by allowing him to explore different tempos, rhythms, and beats.   Pretty soon, Columbia Records picked him up after he toured England as an acoustic act and released his early music on the website Bandcamp.

Although this song is HUGE in England, it's gaining a slow burn here in the States.  However, I think it's only a matter of time before this song explodes just like Lukas Graham's "7 Years" did.

Plus, with such deep lyrics like

"Take a look in the mirror
And what do you see
Do you see it clearer
Or are you deceived
In what you believe
'Cause I'm only human after all
You're only human after all
Don't put the blame on me
Don't put your blame on me"

I think a lot of writers will draw inspiration from this song.  Also, don't be surprised if some major TV show uses it in their end credits scene.  It's too fitting.

Marian Hill - Down

Marian Hill isn't actually a person... it's a band!  I know, my mind was blown when I first found this out, too.  Anyways, the band's name is mashup of their favorite characters from the musical The Music Man: Marian Paroo and and Harold Hill!  I'm sure if you're a Broadway geek, you danced a little.

Marian Hill is a songwriting duo from Philedelphia: Jeremy Lloyd and vocalist Samantha Gongol.  These two have been bopping under the radar for awhile.  Their smooth jazzy music even got the attention of The New York Times in 2013!   James Corden also welcomed them onto the Late Late Show back in 2015.  However, it was all thanks to Apple for making the world notice what some of music's biggest fans noticed already.

Using "Down" in their commercial for the new iPhone 7 and it's accompanying airpod earbuds (which I don't even have but I am sure I lost already,) the song became a Shazam sensation and, soon enough, radio stations around the nation were getting requests to play the song that the audience heard in the Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks playoff game.

So, to close out my reference to The Killers "Are we Human (Rag'n'Bone Man) or are we dancer (Marian Hill)... here's some lyrics!

"Thrown up in the air to help them dance
Come on, baby, catch me if you can, I
Know you don't have any other plans
Are you down, d-d-down, d-d-down, d-d-down, down, down?
Down, d-d-down, d-d-down, d-d-down, down, down?"
