Music You Should Know - A New Kind of Love Song

Ed Sheeran and Maroon 5 are talking matters of the heart this week!

Maroon 5 ft. SZA – What Lovers Do

After teaming up with Kendrick Lamar and Future, Maroon 5 is back with an all-new steamy collab with up and coming artist, SZA. She's a 26-year-old neo-soul singer that was named one of the best new artists of 2017.  And, man, does she prove she deserved that title fair and square with the smart lyrics and vocal tricks she put into this song.

What Lovers Do is a sexy gamble on a new kind of love song, one that's filled with falsettos and somewhat darker imagery.  Still, it manages to walk the line between explicit and tame.

The song explores what it's like before a couple starts to become too involved.  Is it too early? Too late?  Are their feelings even worth it at this point?  So by highlighting the insecurities everyone must feel before they have that kind of discussion, this song is easily relateable to anyone who's been in love.  Because we've all had thoughts just like these lyrics:

Aren't we too grown for games?
Aren't we too grown to play around?
Young enough to chase
But old enough to know better
Are we too grown for changin'?
Are we too grown to mess around?
Ooh and I can't wait forever baby
Both of us should know better

Also, as for the tone of the song, it's way more calm than sultry, which makes the song even more unique than it already was.  Plus, Maroon 5 gets to say they worked with SZA before she became a music industry juggernaut!

Ed Sheeran – Perfect

Ed Sheeran's ready to say goodbye to "Thinking Out Loud."  Seriously, he says he could write a way better love song than that, and that's why we have "Perfect."  It's a song about his "beautiful and smart" sweetheart, Cherry Seaborn.  The two grew up together and soon he developed a major crush on her in high school.  The rest, obviously, was history.

Ed says he wanted to write a love song by himself, without any help.  "Thinking" was written with the help of folk singer Amy Wadge.  So, he got to work and came out with "Perfect," which is basically every Disney happy ending condensed into one song.  It's guaranteed to be THE new wedding song, too.

Ed Sheeran told Zane Lowe:

“I just wanted to beat ‘Thinking Out Loud.’ I wasn’t in any other mind. “I wanted to beat ‘Thinking Out Loud’ because I know that song was gonna define me. ... With ‘Perfect,’ it was like, ‘I need to write the best love song of my career.’”

However, this song was inspired by James Blunt while the two were jamming in his back yard while listening to Future.  Strange, isn't it?  Not really.  Because that little hangout inspired probably his best song.

Give it a listen: do you think this is better than "Thinking out Loud?"
