Pope John Paul II was born Karol Józef Wojtyła. He was the second longest-serving pope, holding the office from 1978 to his death in 2005. He was considered one of the most influential people of the 20th century, helping to bring an end to communism in all of Europe. John Paul II was beatified in May 2011 after being credited to healing a French nun of Parkinson's disease.
