What began as a tent in the middle of a field has turned into one of the most popular events venues in New Haven County. Though the Toyota Presents: The Oakdale Theatre's exterior remains simple and unassuming, inside lies a modern and spacious theater/concert hall that schedules mainstream musicians, comedians, Broadway plays, and family shows. Despite the Oakdale Theatre has struggled to achieve its current glory, its success and popularity have been well deserved.
The Oakdale Theatre has itself evolved along with American entertainment since its creation in 1954. The theater began under a tent in the middle of an alfalfa field, and capitalized on the "theater in the round" craze that was occurring at the time. At the onset of the 60s, the Oakdale Theatre began to schedule musicians and featured bands like Led Zeppelin and The Who during their mainstream emergence later in the decade. The venue received a roof in 1972 and continued to feature both musicians and theatrical productions into the 90s, when they became popular for booking country musicians during the genres revival. The theater as it is today was built in 1997 and has since scheduled such star performers as Rod Stewart, Bruce Springsteen, Jerry Seinfeld, and Robin Williams.
Toyota Presents: The Oakdale Theatre continues its rich legacy of entertainment to this day, and always has a great performance on its schedule. Visit the Oakdale Theatre tonight for a show that is bound to become a part of this venue's history.
