Peter Hernandez, who goes by his stage name Bruno Mars is a 28 year old singer-songwriter and record producer. His father gave him the nickname "Bruno" when he was 2 years old for his resemblance to pro wrestler Bruno Sammartino. Bruno was raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and born into a house of musicians. He was exposed to an eclectic mix of genres at a young age; reggae, rock, hip hop and R&B. Bruno new what he wanted his life to like at the age of four. He started performing songs by Michael Jackson, The Temptations and The Isley Brothers. You can definitely hear where the inspiration came from in Bruno' songs. He picked up the guitar after listening to Jimi Hendrix, and of course being around an entire family of musicians. Bruno said his siblings and parents all knew how to sing and play instruments.
Bruno moved to LA when he was seventeen to pursue a career in music. In 2005 he landed a music publishing deal with Steve Lindsey, who Bruno says was his personal mentor. Steve "held Bruno back" in a way to teach him the ins & outs of writing hit pop songs. Before Bruno became the phenomenal solo artist we know him as today, he was first acknowledged in the biz by writing and producing songs for other artists: Adam Levine, Flo Rida, Brandy and Travie McCoy.
Bruno released his debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans in 2010 and it was a massive hit! I thoroughly enjoyed that album because it was a mix! You hear mellow reggae influences that can be compared to Jason Mraz on songs like "Count On Me" and "The Lazy Song." Couple tracks had smooth R&B sounds, and then my personal favorite on that album, "Runaway Baby" where it's totally grooving!
It was just about 2 years later when Bruno hit us with a second album that totally exceeded expectations! I could go on and on about Unorthodox Jukebox the album as a whole is fantastic! My two favorite songs are "Locked Out of Heaven" and "Money Make Her Smile." Unorthodox Jukebox speaks for itself -debuting in the U.S at number 2 on the Billboards and selling over 187,000 copies in its first week! Bruno Mars stepped it up with this one! To go along with the rocking album, his performances at the Grammy's and VMA's were everything we cold want! Singing and dancing all over stage and his voice sounds no different than the album, you don't get that too often these days!
Bruno just rocked the Superbowl halftime show! Started it off with a fun drum solo and invited the RHCP onstage with him to crank it up. It was probably the highlight of the night considering the game was not that exciting.
