Some people call her the modern “Nancy Sinatra”, some say her music will change the pop genre, and some people just find her very strange. In general, Lana Del Rey is noticeable, and talented in her own distinct way. Her music isn’t just about the sound either; her accompanying music videos are just as elaborate, almost like mini movies. She thinks of herself as more of an artist, than a singer.
Elizabeth Grant is her real name, and she is only 28 years old. She grew up in Lake Placid, New York, but actually has Connecticut roots as well. During her high school years, she attended the boarding school, Kent School. Her uncle taught her the guitar when she was a teenager, and she was in the church choir as a child. She went to Fordham University in the Bronx, and started songwriting during her freshman year. Music was a fun thing that she did with her friends. They all performed at different underground clubs in Brooklyn and the Bronx. So Lana never really took music seriously, let alone as a career. That is kind of interesting, considering the fact that Lana has openly admitted to not liking fame.
She was discovered at one of those clubs in Brooklyn and started recording in 2005. It wasn’t until 2010 did her first album, self titled-Lana Del Rey, come out and that’s because she took a break to do community service. Two years later, she uploaded some of her music to YouTube and was discovered by a different record label. Two more albums have been released since then, the most recent one being 2014’s Ultraviolence. Last summer, her song, Summertime Sadness, off her 2nd album, Born to Die, came out. That single is Lana’s most successful, because of its remixed version. It is the only song she has had in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 Chart. You may also recognize Lana’s music from Baz Luhrmann's movie, The Great Gatsby. Her song, Young and Beautiful, is the main song from that movie.
