COMMUNITY RALLIES AROUND SICK GIRL

By Marit Price

When Sharon Jansen's severely ill 7-year-old daughter, Claire Kenny, almost died in her arms before being revived, she thought she'd seen the worst.  After more than 10 surgeries, Claire is beginning the long road to recovery, but last week Jansen, 47, and her fiance, Mike Kenny, 50, were hit with a foreclosure notice that has left the family wondering if they'll have a home for the holidays.

If the family can't come up with about $6,600 by Dec. 5, they will be homeless. Jansen said she is worried sick about what might happen to her daughter. Kenny works 60 hours a week as a truck driver, but Jansen had to quit working in 2006 to take care of Claire.  The family has not made a mortgage payment since July, which is the same month Claire underwent her most recent surgery, and when she stopped breathing.

Claire's medical bills are now all paid through Medicaid, but both parents need to work to keep up with mortgage payments. Last year, the Umbrella Club helped the family pay its mortgage. Kenny also cashed out his 401(k) plan to help keep the family afloat.

A silent auction and dinner is planned for Saturday as a last ditch attempt to help keep the family in their home.  The pasta dinner and silent auction will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at St. Gabriel Parish Hall, 26 Broadway in Milford. There is a suggested donation of $8 for adults, $5 for children or $25 for a family of four or more.

Contributions can be made payable to "An Event for Claire and Her Family" and sent to St. Pierre, 38 Spring St., Milford 06460.
