Those sneaky supermarkets! From HuffingtonPost writer Shilo Urban, here are some of their underhanded tricks they use to get you to buy more:
1. Shopping carts: they put them right in the front of the store. If you grab one, you'll be tempted to fill it up, rather than just buy the one or two items you came in for.
2. They fill the air with smells of fresh-baked bread or fresh flowers from the floral department.
3. They put the milk in the back of the store, in the hopes you'll be distracted on the walk and maybe pick up a few more items.
4. They keep the produce wet, because you'll think shiner vegetables are fresher.
5. Aisles are purposefully skinny, to slow you down so you'll stop and look.
6. Items on displays at the ends of the aisles may not necessarily be on sale, but because they stand out, you'll think they are.
7. They remove the dollar sign from price tags. You think something that is marked $2.99 is more expensive than something marked 2.99.
8. By limiting the amount you can buy, it will make you think the item is scarce, so you'll buy more than one.
9. If some nice old lady gives you a free sample of food, you'll feel guilty if you don't buy her product.
10. The more expensive names brand items are at eye-level. The cheaper brands are higher or lower. Except for sugary cereal - those are placed at lower levels where kids can see them.
11. They want you to stand in line at checkout in the hopes you will buy the high-markup items, such as magazines, candy, or lip balm. (Source: Huffington Post)
