COUPON TAX CONTROVERSY

It's a coupon controversy at the Capitol. Discount hunters are upset with Gov. Dannel Malloy's proposal to slap a new sales tax on the prices of goods before its sale price.  Malloy's plan would change the way items are taxed, and those coupons won't be as good anymore.Coupons have been a pretty good way to get a deal on something, but Malloy will use those to increase taxes."That is not something I would really enjoy," said Newington resident Lynn Furman.  If someone wanted to buy a $100 tennis racket with a $10 off coupon, you would have to pay a 6 percent sales tax on $90, and with the tax it would come to $95.40. Under Malloy's proposed plan, you would pay the sales tax on the original price, not the discounted amount, and the sales tax would be higher, because they want to raise that too.  More...
