MUNDANE MYSTERIES: How did they celebrate the New Year in Times Square before the ball drop started?

A lot of people will be heading into NYC for New Year’s Eve tomorrow to see the ball drop in Times Square. But before they had the ball the celebration was a bit different.

They used to use fireworks to celebrate the new year, which to be honest seems dangerous in the middle of a big city. Eventually they realized this and banned but the firework displays because the burning embers were falling on the crowd. Probably a smart move.

In 1907 they came up with the idea of a giant ball being lowered on a flagpole because it sounded much safer. It’s been that way ever since.

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Paving the way to the future of roads

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Paving the way to the future of roads

There is a new creative pilot program that launched in 4 different states which solves a few problems. First, getting rid of big unrecyclable plastics like computers, batteries, and big rubber items like tires. While also making our roads better for the future.

They taking those unrecyclable items and grinding them down into a fine mixture that can be used to pave roads. A great way to reuse the items and possibly even make the roads more durable.. Missouri, Pennsylvania, Virginia, California, and Hawaii are all on board and it could be coming to more states soon.

Brilliant.

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: The Juice Box Trick

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: The Juice Box Trick

For anyone who has young kids or ever has, you probably already know about this one. But for any new parents out there or if you don’t have kids prepare for your mind to be blown.

You know the little triangle flaps on the left and right side of a juice box? They actually serve a functional purpose. They’re meant to pull apart from the side of the box and used as handles. That way you won’t spill all the juice out of the straw by squeezing the middle.

Genius!

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Where did the football term Hail Mary come from?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Where did the football term Hail Mary come from?

Even if you’re not a big football fan you’ve probably been around a TV that has football on it in the last month due to all the holidays, family gatherings, and amount of college and pro games being played. There were even a few Hail Mary’s thrown. But where did that term come from?

For those that don’t know, a Hail Mary is when the Quarterback throws a last second desperation pass, usually 50 yards or more, to the end zone to try and win the game. Back in 1975 a guy named Roger Staubach playing for Dallas at the time threw a 50-yard TD pass to beat Minnesota.

When the on-field reporter asked him about the final winning play after the game he said “I guess you could call it a Hail Mary.  You throw it up and pray.”

The term stuck ever since.
