TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Connecticut welcomes plane full of dogs rescued from Florida after Hurricane Ian

With Florida still recovering from the destruction of Hurricane Ian there were a lot of dogs that were rescued from the area who now are without homes.

Today around lunchtime a plane with 22 of those dogs arrived at Bradley International Airport up in Hartford. Organized by the Connecticut Humane Society, these dogs will now hopefully be getting the care they need and maybe even a new home.

Love to see it!

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Where did the the Box Office come from?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Where did the the Box Office come from?

If you are heading to the movies, a concert, or maybe show on Broadway you most likely bought your tickets from the box office. Even though most people now just buy them online there are some diehards who like to go up to the Box Office window and purchase a real ticket.

So why is it called a Box Office?

Back in the 18th century when the term started being used in newspapers to advertise where people could purchase “box seats” at the theater. These were usually the expensive seats in those little balcony “boxes” you see in some theaters. Regular tickets were purchased by a ticket taker as you walked into the venue.

As time went on they started selling all tickets from the box office.

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: There is a new champ for Heaviest Pumpkin In America

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: There is a new champ for Heaviest Pumpkin In America

It’s pumpkin season and farmers all over have been trying to grow the heaviest pumpkin for months now.

On Monday a 2,560-pound pumpkin was entered into a contest at a fair in California. It won and was officially declared the heaviest pumpkin in U.S. The guy who grew it is from Minnesota and drove all the way out west just to submit it.

The largest pumpkin ever grown by a Connecticut resident was a 2,294 pound pumpkin last year grown by a guy named Alex Noel from Northeast part of the state

A lot of farmers say the drought this year has lead to pumpkins growing smaller than usual or cracking as they get bigger. So maybe next year we can get a Connecticut pumpkin to break that record.

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What does PEZ stand for?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What does PEZ stand for?

I realize this is something I should already know living less than twenty minutes from the PEZ HQ in Orange. What does PEZ mean?

The name PEZ comes from the German word for peppermint, “PfeffErminZ” which I’m not even going to attempt to pronounce.

They took the P from the first letter, E from the middle and Z from the last letter to form the word PEZ. Much easier to say. Then in 1952, PEZ came to the United States. By 1973 PEZ had arrived here in Connecticut to open their first candy manufacturing facility in Orange, CT!
