TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: How one guy in England is beating the drought in his own creative way

It seems that everywhere is going through a crazy drought lately. Even over in England where it’s really bad. To the point that the English government recently announced a ban on garden hose watering in certain parts.

But one guy doesn’t have to worry about this at all. His name is Peter Harden and he’s been storing rainwater in huge containers on his property since 1976 when England went through another famous drought. He now has almost 1,500 gallons of water all to himself to use.

He’s an 82 year old former teacher who has been retired for a while now. He’s lived in the same house for 52 years and as you can imagine… has the greenest lawn on the block.

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why do dog’s noses get wet?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why do dog’s noses get wet?

You’ve heard the old saying that if a dog’s nose is wet it means they’re healthy. This is true, but why?

The noses of dogs secrete mucus. There are special glands on the inside of the dog’s nose that produce this. That layer of mucus sticks to the nostrils amping up the scent chemicals which improve the dog’s smell. That’s why they are do great at sniffing out things when being a search dog.

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Hudson River plane survivor returns to river for a good cause

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Hudson River plane survivor returns to river for a good cause

Okay remember that crazy story dubbed “Miracle on the Hudson” with the plane that crash-landed in the Hudson River in 2009? Sully the pilot was the hero, they even made a movie based on it all. Well now one of the passengers recently returned to the river to raise money for a really good cause.

His name is Dave Sanderson and he was one of the guys who helped to make sure everyone got off the plane safely once it landed.  A few weeks ago he teamed up with the Navy SEALS to do a 3.1 mile swim on the river raising money for a veterans charity called the G.I. Go Fund.

Amazing to see a lot of good still coming from that scary moment all these years later.

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Where did the phrase “to pass with flying colors” come from?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Where did the phrase “to pass with flying colors” come from?

The school year is starting up which means report cards and exam grades are also coming soon.

The phrase “pass with flying colors” gets thrown around a lot this time of year. But where did it come from?

The phrase itself means “to be extremely successful, to achieve something that is difficult, to excel”

It was first used way back when battle ships would return home with their “colors” (another word for flags) flying high to show they won and were coming back home safe with a victory.

Good luck on all those tests, kids. Hope you pass them all with flying colors.
