MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why is National Disc Jockey Day on January 20th?

It’s National Disc Jockey Day! But why?

The reason it is celebrated on January 20th is because one of the original disc jockeys and radio legends Alan Freed died 57 years ago today.  He helped popularize the term “rock and roll” back in the 1950s and is the reason you hear people like myself on the radio playing music today.

So Happy National DJ Day to… uh, me I guess! Thanks for always listening to Star.

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: The fun story behind everyone’s favorite new word puzzle game

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: The fun story behind everyone’s favorite new word puzzle game

You’ve probably noticed all the yellow/green/gray boxes flooded your Facebook and Twitter feed recently. It’s called Wordle. The new puzzle gam everyone is either obsessed with or super annoyed by. No matter how you feel about the actual game the story behind it is pretty interesting.

Wordle is a website that the daily word-guessing game lives on. It was created by a British site called Power Language.  There has been a little confusion though, because there is also an app in the app store with the same name. So now this old app that’s also called Wordle has gotten TONS of downloads in just a week. About 200,000.

It’s a completely different thing and has nothing to do with the game everyone is playing. But the guy who owns that old app has decided it feels wrong to profit off people’s mistake, so he said he will be donating all the money that’s coming in! It’s been about $2,000 so far and just keeps getting higher every day.

At the end of the month he will reveal the total and donated all to charity.

p.s. I crushed today’s game… just sayin’

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Is popcorn really low-calorie?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Is popcorn really low-calorie?

Today is National Popcorn Day. You’ve probably heard before how it’s a low calorie “healthy snack”. This is mostly true if you eat it plain. Sure, popcorn is considered a low-calorie snack if it’s just a cup of plain, air-popped popcorn it only contains 31 calories. As a comparison a serving of potato chips is about 139 calories.

Now, if you start adding on all the good stuff… butter, salt, and other toppings that low cal goes right out the window. But it’s National Popcorn Day so go wild!

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Disney World’s thoughtful way of recycling their holiday decorations

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Disney World’s thoughtful way of recycling their holiday decorations

A lot of times the real magic of Disney and Disney World are all the things they do behind the scenes.

For example… every holiday season Walt Disney World has these massive gingerbread house displays up in the park. Once the holidays come and go what they do to get rid of all the gingerbread is a magical idea.

There is a video about what happens. Basically instead of tossing it in the trash, they dismantle it all and take it to a farm where they let bees eat it. Apparently bees love gingerbread. Who knew?!
