While this story is unbelievably sad and tragic, the tributes that are pouring in for New Canaan’s Teddy Balkind are truly special and will hopefully bring some comfort to Teddy’s family and friends after an unthinkable loss.
Teddy, who was only 16 years old, lost his life a few weeks ago after an accidental neck injury during a hockey game in Greenwich. The story has rocked the hockey world and Fairfield County community. Teddy is being remembered as a great friend, positive kid, always happy and a born leader.
In the days and weeks since the incident everyone is paying tribute to Teddy in their own thoughtful ways. Including NHL teams across the league. Wednesday night was the New York Rangers first home game at MSG since the accident. During warm-ups they all wore custom jerseys with his last name on the back and hung his St Luke’s jersey up over the bench on the boards.
Many others are posting photos of hockey sticks on social media using the hashtag #sticksforteddy to bring comfort to his family and friends. It’s something Teddy’s friends say he would’ve loved.
You can also bring a new teddy bear in memory of Teddy to any Stamford/Westhill home game this month. The bears will be used for children in need in the community. Next game coming up is this Saturday 1/22.
All of us here at Star 99.9 send our love and prayers to Teddy’s family and friends.
The reason it is celebrated on January 20th is because one of the original disc jockeys and radio legends Alan Freed died 57 years ago today. He helped popularize the term “rock and roll” back in the 1950s and is the reason you hear people like myself on the radio playing music today.
So Happy National DJ Day to… uh, me I guess! Thanks for always listening to Star.

You’ve probably noticed all the yellow/green/gray boxes flooded your Facebook and Twitter feed recently. It’s called Wordle. The new puzzle gam everyone is either obsessed with or super annoyed by. No matter how you feel about the actual game the story behind it is pretty interesting.
Wordle is a website that the daily word-guessing game lives on. It was created by a British site called Power Language. There has been a little confusion though, because there is also an app in the app store with the same name. So now this old app that’s also called Wordle has gotten TONS of downloads in just a week. About 200,000.
It’s a completely different thing and has nothing to do with the game everyone is playing. But the guy who owns that old app has decided it feels wrong to profit off people’s mistake, so he said he will be donating all the money that’s coming in! It’s been about $2,000 so far and just keeps getting higher every day.
At the end of the month he will reveal the total and donated all to charity.
Today is National Popcorn Day. You’ve probably heard before how it’s a low calorie “healthy snack”. This is mostly true if you eat it plain. Sure, popcorn is considered a low-calorie snack if it’s just a cup of plain, air-popped popcorn it only contains 31 calories. As a comparison a serving of potato chips is about 139 calories.
Now, if you start adding on all the good stuff… butter, salt, and other toppings that low cal goes right out the window. But it’s National Popcorn Day so go wild!
