MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What happens if there is a tie for gold in the Olympics?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What happens if there is a tie for gold in the Olympics?

Keeping with our Olympics theme for Mundane Mysteries today’s question… what happens if there is a tie for gold? This obviously doesn’t happen that often since a lot of the timed events are decided by a tenth of a second, but it does happen. So they have to have a system for it. Which they do.

If two athletes tie for gold (which actually happened in the 2014 Winter Olympics for the Women’s Downhill Ski Final) they both get a gold medal, a silver isn’t given out, and the runner up gets the bronze.

If there is a tie for silver, same idea. First gets gold, second and third get silver. No bronze given out.

If there is a ties for bronze then both get the bronze medal and gold and silver are given out as normal.

I don’t believe there have been any ties in Tokyo yet this year… but now you know what happens if there is one.

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Former flight attendant will honor 9/11 victims in his own unique way

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Former flight attendant will honor 9/11 victims in his own unique way

We are quickly coming up on the 20 year anniversary of 9/11. Crazy that it’s already been TWENTY YEARS since that awful day.

A lot of people will be honoring the victims and paying tribute in their own special ways. This one 62-year-old former flight attendant named Paul Veneto will be doing something really cool. He knew a lot of the crew members who were on the plane that hit the South Tower. Starting next month he will be pushing an airline beverage cart 220 miles. Starting in Boston and ending at Ground Zero in New York City.

You can follow along with his journey and donate at PauliesPush.com

Such a cool idea. Good luck Paul!

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Are Olympic gold medals made of solid gold?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Are Olympic gold medals made of solid gold?

If you win a gold medal at the Olympics are you actually getting a solid 100% gold medal?! The answer is actually no.

In fact full gold medals haven’t been given since the 1912 Olympics. Today’s Olympic Gold Medals are actually made mostly of all silver. Then there is small thin coating of about 6 grams of gold so it can meet the standard laid out in the Olympic Charter.

Fun fact about this year’s medals for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo… they were made from 80,000 tons of recycled electronics. The medals in Tokyo weigh about 1.2 pounds each. If they were all made of pure gold that would end up costing close to $32,000 per medal, based on current market prices for gold. So you can see why they opted for the coated instead.

Now if you ever meet someone who has an Olympic gold medal you can share this with them!
