MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Where does the term “dog days of summer” come from?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Where does the term “dog days of summer” come from?

Even though it’s been feeling like summer lately, summer officially starts this Sunday at 11:32pm. In the next few months you might hear the term “dog days of summer” pretty often. But what does it actually mean?

The phrase “dog days of summer” comes from astronomy.  Sirius which is the “Dog Star”, rises in late July.  In ancient Greece, the “dog days” meant the hottest part of the year. That’s why they started calling it the “dog days of summer”.

Now when someone says that to you this year you can drop this knowledge on them.

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: A Scary Shark Story With A Happy Ending

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: A Scary Shark Story With A Happy Ending

It’s that time of year when we start to hear stories of shark attacks up and down the east coast. But every once in a while you get a GOOD shark story.

A fisherman out in California recently spotted a great white shark that was tangled in a bunch of fishing lines. Somehow… very carefully I’m guessing, he managed to reach down from his boat and untangle it all without getting bit.

Everyone in this story deserves an award or some kind of medal. The fisherman, the shark, all parties involved.

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What do lobsters eat?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What do lobsters eat?

We all love to eat delicious lobsters… but what do THEY eat? Themselves!

Yup, that’s right. Lobsters are cannibals.  When they’re hungry and looking for food, they’ll happily eat another lobster without even thinking twice about it. Which I totally get. I mean, have you ever had a warm drawn butter lobster roll here in Connecticut? If I was a lobster I’d probably eat other lobsters too.
