TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: 78-year-old Graduate Student Finally Gets Her Diploma

This is such a great story during graduation season.

Talk about being committed to your goals. A 78-year-old woman in Alabama just completed a lifelong goal of graduating from college! If you’re asking what took her so long, she was a single mother back in the 1960s so she had to complete school bit by bit over the years. Now that she finally finished she wants to go for her Master’s next, but plans to take a break first. She’s definitely earned a break! Congrats!

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What does Kit Kat mean? What’s in a Kit Kat?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What does Kit Kat mean? What’s in a Kit Kat?

One of the finest candy bars known to man. The Kit Kat. But where did that name come from?

It actually originates from Japan. It was inspired by the Japanese phrase kitto katsu, which means “You surely will win!” or good luck. Which has actually turned KitKat’s into somewhat of a candy good luck charm across the whole country now. Families sending Kit Kats to their college students before big exams, eating them before a big game. It’s fascinating. We should start doing the same over here actually.

As far as what’s inside a Kit Kat, it’s pretty fascinating. Broken Kit Kats that are damaged during production get taken and ground up to be put in between the wafers mixed with some sugar and cocoa.

Perfect way to make sure none of the candy goes to waste. Brilliant!

Anytime a giant hot dog on wheels pulls up to any occasion it’s sure to put a smile on people’s faces. But especially now when the famous Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is doing some good for people by partnering up with Meals on Wheels to deliver food to people in need. Elderly, disabled, starving, just doing their part to help fill some bellies and put smiles on faces. Lately it’s been up near Portland, Maine making stops, but be sure to keep your eye out around here for this giant hot dog rolling down our streets too.

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why do onions make you cry? And can you prevent it?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why do onions make you cry? And can you prevent it?

This happened to me over the weekend actually. I was cutting onions when all of the sudden… here come the tears. But why does this happen and how can you stop it?!

The part of the onion that makes you cry is the chemical gas that gets released from the juices of the onion. One trick you can try to avoid this or at least delay it is to put the onions in the freezer for ten minutes before you chop them.  They’re less likely to make you cry that way, because it takes longer for the juices to release the chemical gas that makes you tear up.

Definitely trying this next time.
