MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why is it called “Grape Nut” cereal?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why is it called “Grape Nut” cereal?

Ah yes, the horrible Grape-Nut cereal shortage of 2021! You may have heard the buzz lately about how you can’t find Grape-Nut cereal anywhere. The company says the product won’t be back on shelves until March 2021.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve never actually had Grape-Nuts. I have seen the box sitting next to all the other cereals I buy and it doesn’t look like grapes or nuts. So what exactly is a Grape-Nut? and why is it called that?

I went right to the source on at their website grapenuts.com and got this answer:

Grape-Nuts actually contains neither grapes nor nuts. It’s made from wheat and barley. So, why is it called Grape-Nuts? As with many great emblems in history, there are two versions of the story. One says that Mr. Post believed glucose, which he called “grape sugar,” formed during the baking process. This, combined with the nutty flavor of the cereal, is said to have inspired its name. Another explanation claims that the cereal got its name from its resemblance to grape seeds, or grape “nuts.”

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: An Update On The Woman Behind Bernie’s Mittens

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: An Update On The Woman Behind Bernie’s Mittens

You may remember when we did a Tell Me Something Good story on the 2nd grade teach from Vermont who hand-made the mittens Bernie Sanders had on in that meme that went viral. She said at the time that she only made a few pairs four years ago and gave one to Bernie. Since the meme took off she has been bombarded with requests for the mittens even though she doesn’t make them anymore. Well… there is now an update!

What started out as just her side-hustle is turning into something much bigger. She decided to give the people what they want and make some mittens. She’s partnering with a teddy bear company to make 18,000 pairs for anyone who wants to buy them.

What a crazy unexpected story. I love it.
