MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why can you see your breath when it’s cold?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why can you see your breath when it’s cold?

Now that it’s getting cold out you’ve probably noticed you can see your breath outside again. I noticed it for the first time this season last weekend. But why does this happen?

Here is the best explanation why that I found via childrensmuseum.org

When you breathe in (inhale), your body takes in oxygen from the air. And when you breathe out (exhale), your lungs put carbon dioxide back into the air.

However, the breath you exhale doesn’t only contain carbon dioxide. It also contains moisture from your mouth and lungs. This moisture is in the form of water vapor, the gas form of water.

The environment inside of your lungs is warm, providing the energy needed for water to stay in its gas form.

when you step outside into cold temperatures and exhale, the cold air around you doesn’t give off enough energy to keep the water molecules moving around, and they end up packing themselves close together. This causes the moisture in your breath to condense (change into either liquid or solid forms of water), forming a little cloud in the air.

You’ll usually be able to see your breath when it gets to 45 degrees Fahrenheit and below.

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Two Dad’s Show Off Baking Skills To Help People During Pandemic

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Two Dad’s Show Off Baking Skills To Help People During Pandemic

You know what they say… if life gives you a global pandemic, bake cookies! I’m not sure that’s actually what they say, but for these two dad’s in Pennsylvania it is.

Jeremy and Scott who are good friends have been at the forefront of a movement to bake cookies for first responders and business owners during the pandemic.  They’ve already delivered more than 15,000 cookies since April.

They started the charity called Cookies for Caregivers to thank first responders and local business owners working during the COVID-19 pandemic and have been keeping it going all year. They both say that it’s been a great way to stay busy, keep their minds off the pandemic, and do something good for others. After all, everybody enjoys a good cookie right? Yum.

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why do ballpoint pens have a hole in the top of the cap?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why do ballpoint pens have a hole in the top of the cap?

You’ve seen it before when using a black or blue ballpoint pen. The little hole in the top of the pen cap. But why?

It’s actually for a very good reason that could save lives! The purpose of the hole is so in the event that someone accidently swallows the pen cap air can still flow through and the person won’t choke or lose their breathing. This can happen to anyone kids or adults. It can be avoided by not chewing on your pens which is a bad habit for a lot of people. But if it does happen, now you know what that little hole is for.

Thank you pen companies, for looking out for our safety,
