TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: An Old Tasty Election Day Tradition Is Making A Comeback

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: An Old Tasty Election Day Tradition Is Making A Comeback

Today’s Tell Me Something Good is a delicious one. There’s an old Election Day tradition from years ago that’s making a comeback this year. Baking an ELECTION CAKE! Sounds yummy.

Apparently people used to bake this one specific type of cake on Election Day to get them through the long nights of counting ballots at the polls.  It sounds like a decadent fruit cake, almost. The recipe included your standard cake ingredients like flour, butter, and eggs.  But then there are things like brown sugar, buttermilk, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, raisins, and pecans. Yum. Sounds like a holiday comfort food.

A few of the reasons this is making a comeback now is that there has been a big rise in baking during the pandemic with everyone staying home lately. Also people are just looking for ANYTHING at all to help make this election a little smoother. So this works perfectly.

Maybe you can bake it this afternoon and enjoy as you watch results come in all night. Here’s the recipe. Or if you’re not in the mood for baking you can always do the age old tradition of popping the cork on a nice bottle of wine. Either way…

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why Are Elections Held On Tuesday?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why Are Elections Held On Tuesday?

Hopefully you’ve already had  a chance to get to the polls an vote today. While you were waiting in line maybe this question popped into your head… why do we vote on Tuesdays?

Back when Congress was trying to come up with a national Election Day in 1845 their biggest challenge was to accommodate the big rural population of farmers. Obviously there were no cars back then so farmers needed a full day to travel by horse and buggy, then a day to vote in the capital polling place, and another day to return home. Taking out days of worship and Wednesdays, because that was their market day, Tuesday ended up being what they settled on. Specifically the Tuesday following the first Monday in November.  It’s been that way ever since.

So there you go. That’s why you casted your ballot on a Tuesday.

The Anna & Raven Show: Election Day Coverage!

The Anna & Raven Show: Election Day Coverage!

Tuesday November 3rd, 2020

It’s Election Day! Some people claim that (depending on the winner) they’d probably move out of the state. Would you take such a drastic measure if the Election didn’t work out in your favor? (0:00)

People always say they are going to move to Canada if their candidate doesn’t win, so we decided to contact Canada to see if we can actually move there if things don’t go our way after Election Day.  Let’s see what they say… (2:06)

We asked on Facebook where your desired place to move would be if the Election didn’t work out the way you wanted to. Some of the answers were definitely unique! (6:02)

If you are using the weather as an excuse to not vote today, or if you ask people around your neighborhood who you are voting for this year, that’s all I need to know about you! (9:42)

Our Election Day poll monitors are in position and ready to report what is going on out there during Election Day. Anna & Raven check in with Big Mike in Long Island and Producer Jon in Connecticut. (12:37)

We have some fun/real facts for you before you get out to those polls and vote! Be sure to listen to them before you show up at the polls to vote! (16:10)

We hit the streets and asked kids if they knew what some electoral terms meant. Have they been paying attention in school or have they even been taught these things yet? Find out! (19:27)

We check in again with Big Mike and Producer Jon at the polls to see how the turnout has been and how the weather has been treating everybody. (25:26)

Couples Court: Jared’s been working from home throughout the pandemic and is constantly on Zoom with a female coworker. Jared’s wife, Angela, says it’s too much. She’s uncomfortable with her husband constantly working with another woman and thinks it’s inappropriate. He says she’s a coworker, they’re working, even if it’s late. She wants time boundaries; he says that’s not feasible with their company right now. (29:22)

Christine is up in today’s Can’t Beat Raven with $2,900 on the line! Can she pull it off or will we add another $100 to tomorrow’s jackpot?! (37:03)

We continue our coverage of Election Day with both Big Mike in Long Island and Producer Jon in Connecticut! How has it been going all morning? What have they been seeing and who have they been running into? (40:50)

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Guy Spreads Positivity From Street Corner Every Day For 2 Months Straight

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Guy Spreads Positivity From Street Corner Every Day For 2 Months Straight

We’ve all been through a lot in 2020 so far. Pandemic, civil unrest, a crazy election coming up tomorrow. The most positive boosts we can get, the better.

For two months now this one guy in Harrisburg, PA has been standing on this one street corner for 6 days a week doing his best to brighten people’s day.  Waving at drivers, smiling, holding signs with positive messages like “You’re important” and “Red or Blue, I love you”.  His motivation? He says he knew people were super stressed about the pandemic and the upcoming election. So back on September 1st he decided to do this every morning until Election Day.

Love it. More of this!

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: How Do Astronauts Vote From Space?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: How Do Astronauts Vote From Space?

With election day coming up tomorrow today’s mystery is how do astronauts vote from space?

As you might imagine it’s very similar to how military members vote via absentee with a few additional things because ya’know… space.

This is how it’s explained from NASA…

Like other forms of absentee voting, voting from space starts with a Federal Postcard Application, or FPCA. It’s the same form military members and their families fill out while serving outside of the U.S. By completing it ahead of their launch, space station crew members signal their intent to participate in an election from space.

Because astronauts move to Houston for their training, most opt to vote as Texas residents. Of course, NASA’s astronauts come from all over, so those wishing to vote as residents of their home states can work with their counties to make special arrangements to vote from space.

Once their FPCA is approved, the astronaut is almost ready to vote. Like many great things in space, voting starts with an experiment. The county clerk who manages elections in the astronaut’s home county sends a test ballot to a team at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. Then they use a space station training computer to test whether they’re able to fill it out and send it back to the county clerk.

After a successful test, a secure electronic ballot generated by the Clerk’s office of Harris County and surrounding counties in Texas, is uplinked by Johnson’s Mission Control Center to the voting crew member. An e-mail with crew member-specific credentials is sent from the County Clerk to the astronaut. These credentials allow the crew member to access the secure ballot.

The astronaut will then cast their vote, and the secure, completed ballot is downlinked and delivered back to the County Clerk’s Office by e-mail to be officially recorded. The clerk has their own password to ensure they are the only one who can open the ballot. It’s a quick process, and the astronaut must be sure to submit it by 7 p.m. local time on Election Day if voting as a Texas resident.

So there you go. That’s how it’s done. Best part? No polling place lines in space.
