TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Guy Spends $5,000 To Buy Random People Groceries

With so many people struggling lately financially from the pandemic it’s always great to see someone step up and help out if they can. I always love these pay it forward type stories.

This one business owner who’s from Idaho celebrated his birthday last week in what might be the most generous way ever.  He sent some of his employees to a grocery store with $5,000, and had them pay for random people’s groceries.  He wanted to do it quietly under the radar but of course the local news station caught wind of it.

Here’s the segment they ran on how it all came about and some of the grateful customers who got the big surprise.

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why Does Orange Juice Taste Horrible After Brushing Your Teeth?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why Does Orange Juice Taste Horrible After Brushing Your Teeth?

We’ve all had that moment in the morning. You brush your teeth in the morning while getting ready then while eating a quick breakfast before you head out the door, you take a sip of your orange juice. YUCK! Possible the worst tasting thing of all time. Completely ruins your morning.

But what causes this to happen?

According to howstuffworks.com, the foaming agent used in most toothpaste is what you can blame for the unappealing taste. It’s called sodium lauryl sulfate. It actually dampens the sweet receptors in your mouth. This means your delicious orange juice and anything else you might eat or drink will not taste as sweet in those moments after brushing your teeth.

Also, sodium lauryl sulfate destroys the molecules in your mouth that usually help to prevent bitter tastes from being too strong. This means that the toothpaste not only works to make the orange juice less sweet, it also amplifies its bitterness. Thanks a lot TOOHPASTE! These two effects are what team up together to create the horrible taste. Like a flavor super villain.

So if you’re planning on having a nice glass of OJ maybe wait to brush your teeth until after.

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Group Of Teens Create Groundbreaking New App To Help People With Dementia

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Group Of Teens Create Groundbreaking New App To Help People With Dementia

I feel like every day there is another story that inspires hope in the future of our youngest generations.

This one is about three teenagers who spent three months during lockdown creating an app called Memory Haven which helps people with dementia. It includes games, tasks, and features to help prevent memory loss. There is even a cool music playlist feature that uses facial recognition technology to pick songs based on the person’s mood.

The app won them top prize in an international contest against 1,500 other teams across the world.

This is the kind of innovation that will change our world for the better. Well done!

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why Do Jeans Have That Little Fifth Pocket?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why Do Jeans Have That Little Fifth Pocket?

You’ve caught your finger in it by accident many times. That little pocket on your front right pocket of your jeans or pants. The elusive “fifth pocket”. It’s always been there, but what exactly is it’s purpose?

Some people say it’s for spare change, some say for chapstick or lipstick. But the real reason it was originally designed that way was for pocket watches. Yup. Those old timey chain and clock face devices. They were first used with the original Levi’s waist overall design back in 1890 and have never left the right side of people’s pants ever since.

Obviously people no loner use pocket watches (it’s only a matter of time before they make a trendy comeback right?) but I heard a rumor that the new iPhone 12 mini that comes out next month might actually fit in that little fifth pocket. That would REALLY bring this whole tiny pocket mystery full circle.
