Anna & Raven’s Star of the State: Stratford

Anna & Raven’s Star of the State: Stratford

Anna & Raven’s Star of the State: Stratford

We’ve decided there’s a lot of towns here in Connecticut that most people have no idea about the cool history they contain, or the best place to hang out, or their modern day claim to fame. Well, no more because Anna & Raven have taken it upon themselves to spend a week highlighting each of our Star Town’s. This week it’s all about Stratford! It will be madness! Connecticut, whoo whoo!

As is custom we like to start the week with a pop quiz to see who in the room know’s the most about our featured town!

On Tuesday Producer Christian caught up with local Goody Bassett Ice Cream shop owner Paul to inquire about Stratford’s history and more!

Every week we also like to feature a local Call-in Corespondent, this week welcome Rocco from Stratford!

Thursday we welcomed Stratford Mayor Laura Hoydick to the Anna & Raven studio here at Star 99.9 to talk all things Stratford!

Sheffield Island

Sheffield Island

The Sheffield Island Ferry

Activated in 1868, the Sheffield Island Lighthouse – now listed on the National Register of Historic Places – was in service for 34 years until its retirement in 1902. Today the Norwalk Seaport Association’s volunteers maintain the lighthouse and grounds as a museum and nature preserve.

Visitors can board the Seaport ferry at the Sheffield Island dock, adjacent to Stroffolino Bridge, corner of Washington and Water Streets, South Norwalk for their trip to the island, the lighthouse or harbor cruises.

Each year the ferry takes thousands of visitors back to a time when this and other lighthouses were critical to coastal and oceangoing shipping.
Once on the island, visitors are treated to a tour of the lighthouse, including a chance to climb up into the light tower itself, where on clear days, the New York City skyline can be seen. The 10-room lighthouse showcases period furniture, and offers a chance to see what life was like for the families of 19th century light keepers.
Another island attraction is the Nature Trail through the Stewart B. McKinney Wildlife Refuge, which completed by the Seaport Association in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. From a viewing platform, a variety of wildlife including nesting herons and other birds can be observed.

Camping

Camping

Connecticut offers campgrounds in thirteen state parks or forests. With the start of the summer season this Memorial Day Weekend, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station are asking campers, vacationers and Connecticut citizens not to transport firewood to prevent the spread of Asian Longhorned Beetle and other wood pests.

Fishing

Fishing

Fishing is great family fun and a healthy outdoor activity enjoyed by young and old alike. Some of the programs developed by DEP to enhance fishing opportunities include fishing education for children and families, the creation of special fishing areas such as Trout Parks, and an aggressive program to allow passage of fish from our ocean waters to the northern stretches of many of the state’s larger streams.

Boating

Boating

The Department of Environmental Protection is working hard to keep Connecticut’s waterways safe, clean and fun for all boaters. We look to every boat operator to help us in our efforts by knowing and obeying the laws and regulations as well as exercising sound environmental practices. Enjoy your time on our waters. Make the sound choice to boat safely and responsibly.
