THE FEED: Planning A Delicious Valentine’s Day

THE FEED: Planning A Delicious Valentine’s Day

Every Tuesday Kevin talks all things food with Alex from CT FoodGirly. With Valentine’s Day two weeks away we figured it was a perfect time to help you start making a Valentine’s Day plan. Brunch, dinner, and even a train experience! Alex has some great ideas for how to celebrate with your loved ones this year.

ALEX’S PICKS:

Shell & Bones in New Haven, which is a seafood eatery right on New Haven Harbor with great water views and they will be celebrating the “Five Days of Valentine’s,” offering specials in addition to its regular menu. Now this is from Feb. 10th to 14th. A couple of their specials are wagyu steak, red velvet lava cake and even a new cocktail.

Amarates Sea Cliff, which is located in New Haven, in the Cove. They are having a Valentine’s Day brunch for adults and families. It’s Sunday February 12th, from 11-2pm. There will be a carving station, unlimited mimosas, and a dessert crepe station! This is a great option for families and its something different than dinner at night.

Union League Cafe in New Haven, which is an amazing French restaurant with a 19th-centrury setting who is featuring their three-course prix-fixe menu, which includes a filet mignon dish, veal, ravioli dish as well and you even get a box of chocolate truffles after.

Wharf at Madison Beach Hotel, which is a really elegant spot, again, beautiful ocean views and a seafood-heavy menu. They have prepared a Valentine’s Day menu Feb 10,11,12, and also the 16th to 19th. Which includes dishes with salmon, fillet, ravioli, and lobster on the menu.

Now this is a little different, how about a romantic train ride? On February 11 through February 14, you can ride the vintage trains during the Essex Steam Train Valentines Dinner. This is a 2 and a half-hour dining excursion and the menu includes appetizers, your choice of Filet Mignon, Baked Stuffed Shrimp or Baked Stuffed Chicken Breast and ending with dessert. This is a really nice choice if you don’t want to go out to a restaurant and want a bit of adventure or to really try something new that day.

Lastly, there is The Essex restaurant, which is located in Old Saybrook, this spot is stunning inside. It’s a modern American, local seasonal farm to table, energetic restaurant, who is offering two menus, on the 14th only. A valentines tasting menu and vegetarian tasting menu. The menu sounds amazing, fresh tuna, lobster, octopus, short rib and more! It’s $145 a person. If I wasn’t traveling for valentine’s day, I would definitely make my reservation here for the tasting menu experience.

It’s a simple 10 minute procedure too, they just didn’t have the means.

He was also able to give some of them a little extra surprising a few with $10,000, giving one kid $50,000 for college and even hooking one guy up with a new Tesla since he was now able to drive for the first time ever!

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Are eggs supposed to be kept refrigerated or room temp?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Are eggs supposed to be kept refrigerated or room temp?

There has been A LOT of egg talk lately. The price of eggs, egg shortages, and a hot debate on twitter about whether they should be refrigerated or can be left at room temp.

Most countries don’t refrigerate their eggs. But here in the US, they are considered a perishable item and therefore have to be refrigerated.

It all comes down to what is done with the eggs when they are first taken from the chickens. In other countries they are taken as is, but in the U.S. they are immediately washed to prevent salmonella and other diseases. But this processes removes the natural protective layer of the egg shell. In the countries that do not was the eggs they claim that vaccinating the chickens prevents those diseases.

There is a benefit to refrigerating them though. At room temp they can last about 21 days, but there is a benefit to keeping them in the refrigerator as they can last closer to 50 days when cold.

The teams are now set for the Super Bowl in a few weeks, the Philadelphia Eagles the take on the Kansas City Chiefs. A few hours before that the most adorable game of the year will happen when a few New England pups take the field for the Puppy Bowl.

There are actually more than a few from Connecticut. 9 rescue dogs from five different shelters across the state made the teams for this year’s game.

There is also a rescue dog from Rhode Island named Joey, who only has two legs. Despite no having any front legs he is a very healthy pup.

As always the Puppy Bowl is a great event for rescues finding homes. The Puppy Bowl will happen Super Bowl Sunday 2/12 starting at 1pm on Animal Planet.

We’ll be rooting for all our New England pups!

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Where did Rock, Paper, Scissors come from?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Where did Rock, Paper, Scissors come from?

Rock, Paper, Scissors. A game that has been entertaining people and solving “who will go first” for years now. My 4-year-old daughter just discovered it for the first time and LOVES it. Which got me thinking where did it even come from?

According to the World Rock Paper Scissors Association, www.wrpsa.com (yes, that’s a real thing come to find out) the earliest versions of the game originated in China as far back as 1600. Then it became popular in Japan, where they called it “Jon Ken Pon.” After that it really caught on in Europe during the 20th Century before eventually making it here to the United States by the 1930s. The rest is history.
