TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: This former soldier proves why you should get going on your bucket list items

If you have a bucket list of life goals now is the time to get started on achieving them. If you need some motivation here’s a story for you.

Les Binns is a 48 year old veteran from the U.K. He was in Afghanistan in 2009 when a bomb went off and blinded him in one eye. Now all these years later he hasn’t let that set him back from his life goals. One of which was to climb Mount Everest. His first two attempts he never got to the summit because both times he turned back to help save other climbers who were struggling along the way. Then on his third try last month he finally did it! Proving why you should never give up, and also get going on that bucket list.

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Who wrote Wheels on the Bus? And is it copywritten?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Who wrote Wheels on the Bus? And is it copywritten?

If you have young kids you’re probably familiar with the many variations of the song Wheels on The Bus. In fact there are so MANY version I was wondering how all these people are able to keep doing the song without copyright issues like Happy Birthday. So who wrote it anyway?

It’s not so clear. Some people think the song was originally created by Verna Hills in the 1800s. The earliest known publishing of the lyrics is the December 1937 issue of American Childhood.

Others think it was based on the melody to the famous nursery rhyme “Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush”  Nursery rhymes are considered to be in the public domain, so, using the copyright rule of thumb of 70 years after the composers death this music is considered to be in the public domain if it was in fact created in the 1800s. So I guess that’s why all these shows are able to use it.

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Lumineers fan gets the surprise of his life while performing on street corner

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Lumineers fan gets the surprise of his life while performing on street corner

This is something we all dream of but usually never happens in real life. Up in Boston they have these community public pianos in the streets that anyone can sit down in play on. A guy named Sam Spencer was sitting there playing one of his favorite songs Ophelia by The Lumineers… when all the sudden the drummer and one of the co-founders of the band immediately recognized the sound of his song and walked over said “that’s a good song man” and asked to join in on the keys. At first he didn’t realize who it was, then when he made the connection he started to freak out.

Jeremiah then invited him to this Friday’s show in Boston and gave him tickets.

How awesome is that?! This kid will be telling that story forever.

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Who designed the current American flag?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Who designed the current American flag?

Since we all just honored our fallen heroes last weekend for Memorial Day it got me thinking how great the design of our flag is here in the U.S. Who designed this version of it anyway?

The story is actually kind of fascinating and I guess I never knew this or learned it in history class and since forgot (more likely).

It was actually a school project by a man named Bob Heft when he was a junior in high school back in 1958. The funny part was he only got a B-minus for a grade on it. And even though Alaska and Hawaii weren’t states yet he still put 50 stars figuring that they would eventually get in.

Then the government love it! President Dwight D. Eisenhower called Bob and the school to tell him the design was approved. After that happened Heft’s teacher did change his grade to an A. Probably the right move.
