With every year that goes by you see less and less payphones. But every once in a while you see one around somewhere. Sometimes they even come in handy to help people.
Like this story in Minneapolis last week, about this kid who got lost and ended up coming across a payphone that somehow still worked. He was able to call 911 and they came out to help him.
The working payphone was installed in a guy’s front lawn near Minnesota. He just put it in for fun thinking it would be a neat idea. Lucky for this kid it came in very handy. The owner of the payphone said he was just surprised the boy knew how to use the thing!
If you ever played softball or got hit by one you know that they don’t really live up to the name. They’re actually pretty hard. So why call them softballs?
Like most things it starts way back in history with a wacky story…
In 1887, some alumni of both Harvard and Yale were hanging out at an annual event in Chicago while they were waiting to find out who won the big football game between the two schools that year. When they got word that Yale ended up winning one of the school’s fans picked up a soft boxing glove and playfully threw it at one of the losing Harvard fans, who swatted at it with a stick nearby! This gave them the idea for a game that wasn’t quite baseball (hardball they used to call it) because it had different rules and much “softer” ball.
Over time the game evolved to what it is today with a ball that is a little bigger than a baseball but not really that soft.

You may have noticed this before when you’re in an elevator. The star that’s next to the number of the floor. I always thought it meant “ground floor” but that’s not the case.
The star represents which floor has the closest outside exit of the building. That’s why sometimes it’s on the first floor, sometimes ground floor, and sometimes some other floor to indicate where the street is.
Fun trivia if you’re ever stuck in an elevator or making small talk with a stranger. You can drop that one on them.
