MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What is the white string on a box of animal crackers for?

This is a very random one today, but do you remember those old school boxes of animal crackers? The package had that white string on top. I always wondered why? Just a fun handle? To make it easier to hang in the stores? Nope. None of those reasons. It’s actually more festive than that.

Animal crackers were first introduced around Christmas time in 1902, the reason they added the string was for people to use the empty cracker boxes as ornaments on your Christmas tree. How cool! I might have to go pick some up tonight and put them on my tree.

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Company uses their office holiday party to help kids

Every company is looking for a creative idea for their annual holiday party. This waste management company in Oregon may have won them all with this one.

More than 80 employees and their families all got together and assembled bikes for kids during the company’s annual Christmas party this year. They put together over 150 bikes which are now being given to local charities, school districts and programs that help children experiencing homelessness.

What an incredible idea!

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why does Salvation Army collect donations using a red pot?

It’s that time of year you’ve probably seen the Salvation Army red pots outside the stores lately. But why do they use the red pot?

The first ever Salvation Army collection kettle took place in San Francisco at the Oakland Ferry located at the foot of Market St. It was actually a large crab pot with a sign that read “Keep the Pot Boiling”

So now when you drop in a few coins you know why that pot is red.

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Family’s dog comes to the rescue of Connecticut infant

We know dog’s are man’s best friend… but also, they’re baby’s best friend it seems.

A couple from here in Connecticut is thankful today for their dog who saved their 9-month-old daughter. Kelly Dowling told People magazine their incredible story of how their Boston Terrier, Henry, got their attention when he kept running in and out of the baby’s nursery and head butting the door. Really stranger behavior. But then when the couple went to check on the baby they discovered she was having trouble breathing

They rushed the daughter to Connecticut Children’s medical center and the doctor managed to clear her airway. Jeff, the husband and father, says that Henry will be rewarded with being allowed to sleep in their bed more and he has a steak in his future.

I think Henry should get whatever food he wants for at least a year.
