TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Two friends reunite after losing touch and make shocking discovery

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Two friends reunite after losing touch and make shocking discovery

I love a good story about friends reconnecting with each other. Especially when there is a twist like this story.

Two women from here in Connecticut named Cheryl Becker and Linda Rinaldi worked together three decades ago at a hospital here in Connecticut. They had lost touch since but now 30 years later they reconnected after they both started researching their ancestry with those online DNA test. Not only did they find each other again they also figured out how they’re half-sisters! How crazy?!

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What is the snow in snow globes made of?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What is the snow in snow globes made of?

Now that you’ve pulled all of your snow globes out from the basement to put on display for the holidays you’ve probably been wondering what the snow particles are made of? No? You’re not? Well I’m going to tell you anyway…

The snow, or the technical term for it “flitter”, was originally bone chips or pieces of porcelain they would use, sometimes it would be sand or sawdust too. As the years went on and snow globes became more popular and and fancy the glass became thinner, the bases were lighter. Eventually the snow was made out of particles of gold foil or non-soluble soap flakes. Which is usually what it is today.

For health and safety reasons, white plastic has actually become more common in most modern snow globes when they’re made.

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: A new eye drop could eliminate your need for reading glasses in minutes

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: A new eye drop could eliminate your need for reading glasses in minutes

For decades now everyone has been looking for that quick fix vision solution. Eating more carrots, contacts, LASIK, but this might be the ultimate holy grail of vision mircales.

There are a new brand of eye drops that have officially hit the market which apparently could replace your eyeglasses if you have trouble seeing close-up.  Much like when you use drops of dry eye or with your contacts. The medicine takes about 15 minutes to kick in, but once it does the effect of sharper vision they say can supposedly last up to 10 hours. Crazy!  The FDA approved the drops back in October and they are just starting to make their way into stores now.

Very interesting. We’re living in the future.

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why do we say both “gift” and “present” during the holidays?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why do we say both “gift” and “present” during the holidays?

Is there a difference whether we give a “gift” or a “present?” That is today’s Mundane Mystery.

Th two words came from different language families. Gift comes from the old German root word for “to give.” It refers to the act of giving but also to the thing being given. The term “present” was from the French which originally meant “to present.” A present is the thing being presented to someone.

But in the end both words essentially mean the exact same thing so you can say gift or present.

Happy holidays!
