MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why do we say “shotgun” to save the front passenger seat?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why do we say “shotgun” to save the front passenger seat?

We’ve all done it when getting in the car for a road trip or with friends. You call “shotgun!” to get the front seat. But why do we say that?

The phrase is a reference to back in the Old West, even though no one actually called it “shotgun” back then… it refers to that time period. Carriage and horse and buggy drivers would often bring along someone to sit next to them in the passenger seat carrying a weapon, usually a shotgun. These co-pilots acted as bodyguards and warded off any robbers or miscreants who got in their way.

I got shotgun!

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: It’s never too late to be a college athlete

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: It’s never too late to be a college athlete

This story is a perfect example of how it’s never too late to start something new. No matter how old you are or where you are in life.

This woman named Debbie Blount recently made the golf team at Reinhardt University in Georgia.  Which normally wouldn’t be big news, but not only did she make the team… she’s also probably the oldest college golfer in the country.  She’s 63 years old, and a sophomore at the university.

It all started years ago when her husband sadly passed away. He was the one who introduced her to golf.  She only started playing golf because she wanted to spend more time with him.

Once he passed, instead of being sad every day, she wanted to do something to stay busy and take her mind off is so she went back to school.  Now she’s on the golf team and her coach and teammates are loving it. She’s almost become sort of a mentor and teacher for them.

The accomplishments don’t stop there. She’s also the first person in her family to attend college and in the running for homecoming queen this year.

Go Debbie!

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why is Frankenstein’s skin green?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why is Frankenstein’s skin green?

It’s Halloween season so today’s mystery is about one of the most famous monster movies ever. Frankenstein. Why is his skin green?

Green is a very monster-y color but there is a very practical reason to why he’s green. Back when Universal Studios was making the movie Frankenstein they realized that the green shows up better on black and white. Very similar to another monster movie, Dracula. It also really popped under the lightening of the set.

If you’re being Frankenstein for Halloween this year now you have a fun fact to go with the costume.
