TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Connecticut Chef Shows His Skills On Food Network Competition

I always say it but we are so fortunate here in Connecticut to have so many great restaurants and chefs. Some of the best in the country. So it always feels good when one of them gets some national TV love.

Chef Dan Kardos has a bunch of restaurants in the Milford/Stratford area including Oar and Oak Birdhouse in Stratford, Liberty Rock Tavern in Milford (who also have a food truck you might have seen at Tribus Beer Company), and a new Birdhouse location which just opened in Milford.

Dan was featured on the hugely popular Food Network show Guy’s Grocery Games with Guy Fieri. The episode aired last night (Thursday) and spoiler alert… HE WON!

If you want to watch the episode it’s streaming on Discovery plus or it’s probably on demand on Food Network. Just search for “Season 27-episode: 10 Fried Feud”

Congrats Dan!

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: How long does it take apples to fully grow?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: How long does it take apples to fully grow?

With it being September and today being the first day that really feels like apple picking weather I figured we’d dive into some apple mysteries. How long does it actually take an apple to grow before being picked?

Standard or full-sized trees can grow up to 30 feet tall which can take six years for the first apples to pop up. The smaller Semi-dwarf and dwarf apple trees usually grow 6 to 20 feet tall and produce full-sized apples in a much shorter time, about three years.

So when you’re out there this weekend picking those apples just remember they took a LONG time to grow. Twist those apples carefully.

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: This winter just got a lot more delicious for Connecticut

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: This winter just got a lot more delicious for Connecticut

With Labor Day behind us a lot of the seasonal food places here in Connecticut are closing until next summer. Seafood restaurants, outdoor patios, lobster roll shacks and hot dog stands. Even some ice cream shops are closing up for the fall and winter… except for one!

Cone Zone in Milford just announced they will stay open this winter daily from 3-8p.m. They will take a few short breaks around the holidays but other than that you’ll be able to get your ice cream fix.

I know they are always playing Star at Cone Zone so big shout out to all the hard working scoopers there who will be dishing up cups and cones in the cold temps. You’re making us all smile because let’s be honest… ice cream makes everything better.
