Mundane Mysteries: Why Is It Impossible To Tickle Yourself?

Mundane Mysteries: Why Is It Impossible To Tickle Yourself?

Today’s Mundane Mystery is about tickling. Some people loved being tickled, others hate it. But one thing is true… you can’t tickle yourself. It’s so weird.

The reason for this is because when you try to tickle yourself there is no feeling of surprise since your brain knows it’s coming. The cells in your brain are telling each other that it’s you who wants to do the tickling. As opposed to if someone else does it. Then your brain has an instant reflex that makes you laugh.

Now you know. Please don’t tickle me. Ha ha

Tell Me Something Good: Group Of Kids Honor Elderly Veteran Who Had Positive Impact On Their Lives

A guy named Ron Jacobson who is a 75-year-old Vietnam Veteran in Washington State is being honored by kids at a local school for all the work he put in as a volunteer for them over the years. The group of kids refer to him as “Grandpa Ron” and before the shutdown due to the pandemic he had spent 900 volunteer hours working with the kids. Once the shutdown started he continued to mentor the students.

Now the kids even keep in touch with Grandpa Ron as pen pals and sometimes volunteering to check on HIM or to walk his dog if he needs it.

What a great story that spans generations of kindness.

Mundane Mystery: How Do The Fortunes Get Inside Of Fortune Cookies?

Mundane Mystery: How Do The Fortunes Get Inside Of Fortune Cookies?

If you’ve ever ordered Chinese food in your life you’ve had this thought run through your head at least a few times post meal. “How do they get these fortunes inside these fortune cookies?!”

I’ve got answers for you…

According to loc.gov

The cookies get baked as flat circles first. Once they are done they’re removed from the oven and the paper fortunes are placed in them before they cool off while they are still flexible. As the cookies cool they harden into that fortune cookie shape we all know and love.

If you REALLY want to get crazy and know some of the inner-working details of how the modern fortune cookie making process is done here you go…

Modern machines follow the same steps of handmade fortune cookies: they mix ingredients, pour batter into 3” cups which are then covered with metal plates to keep the batter flat and bake for about 3 ½ minutes. Vacuums then suck fortunes into place, use metal fingers to fold the fortune in half to trap the fortune inside, bend the cookie into shape, and cool and package the final cookie. Now fortune cookie machines like the Kitamura FCM-8006W can make up to 8,000 cookies in an hour!
