Mundane Mystery: How Do The Fortunes Get Inside Of Fortune Cookies?

Mundane Mystery: How Do The Fortunes Get Inside Of Fortune Cookies?

If you’ve ever ordered Chinese food in your life you’ve had this thought run through your head at least a few times post meal. “How do they get these fortunes inside these fortune cookies?!”

I’ve got answers for you…

According to loc.gov

The cookies get baked as flat circles first. Once they are done they’re removed from the oven and the paper fortunes are placed in them before they cool off while they are still flexible. As the cookies cool they harden into that fortune cookie shape we all know and love.

If you REALLY want to get crazy and know some of the inner-working details of how the modern fortune cookie making process is done here you go…

Modern machines follow the same steps of handmade fortune cookies: they mix ingredients, pour batter into 3” cups which are then covered with metal plates to keep the batter flat and bake for about 3 ½ minutes. Vacuums then suck fortunes into place, use metal fingers to fold the fortune in half to trap the fortune inside, bend the cookie into shape, and cool and package the final cookie. Now fortune cookie machines like the Kitamura FCM-8006W can make up to 8,000 cookies in an hour!

Tell Me Something Good: All-Female Firefighter Crew Make History

Tell Me Something Good: All-Female Firefighter Crew Make History

This is such an inspiring story for women and girls everywhere.

Down in Palm Beach Gardens in South Florida a group of women became the first all-female fire crew in the history of the department’s 57 years.

They all range in age from 29-53 and have spent a combined 80 years saving people and serving their community as EMT’s and firefighters. Up until a few weeks ago they had never all worked a shift together at the same time. Then on September 18th they just happened to all get scheduled to work at the same station and history was made.

MUNDANE MYSTERY: What Makes A Continental Breakfast… Continental?

MUNDANE MYSTERY: What Makes A Continental Breakfast… Continental?

This is one I’ve wondered about for a long time. We’ve all been to a hotel where you’re treated to a complimentary Continental Breakfast to start your day. But where did it actually come from?

Here is what everybodyshops.com had to say…

The term “continental breakfast” actually  originated in Britain in the mid-19th century. There, the phrase “the continent” refers to the countries occupying the mainland of Europe. Therefore, a “continental breakfast” denotes the type of breakfast you’d be served in places like France or Italy.

Breakfasts in these countries are famously light and delicate when compared to the full English breakfast — a heaping plate of sausage, beans, toasts, eggs and more — or an American breakfast — usually some combination of sausages, bacon, pancakes, waffles, potatoes, and toast.

As the nation grew and hotels popped up around the country, hoteliers were pleased to offer a lighter alternative to the traditional American breakfast. Not only did it please European tourists, but it was cheaper and easier to produce and staff.

And that’s how the standard hotel breakfast became the simple pastries, breads, fruits, and coffee spread we know today.

Interesting. This totally makes more sense now. I do love starting my day with a tasty Continental Breakfast when I’ve traveling. Can’t have a heavy breakfast weighing you down all day. Give me that yogurt, fruit, coffee, and scone!
