MUNDANE MYSTERIES: How big can a snowflake actually get?

With the snow falling outside I figured this is a good time to figure out how big the biggest snowflake ever was.

According to our trusty old friends at Guinness World Records, the largest snowflake on record was measured as 15 inches in diameter and 8 inches thick. Wait, WHAT?! That’s insane. Apparently these flakes fell at Fort Keogh in eastern Montana back in January of 1887. That’s a looooooong time ago so I guess take those measurements with a grain of salt.

Safe to say I haven’t seen any snowflakes here in Connecticut that big… YET!
