MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why do wine bottles have a dent in the bottom?

Perfect mystery for a Friday heading into the weekend. Why do wine bottles have that dent in the bottom? It actually has a name too, called a punt. The punt makes the wine bottles stronger when the pressure is put in by the cork. That way, your favorite wine doesn’t explode all over the place. It also doubles as a fancy type handle for servers to hold onto the bottle with their thumb in there while they are pouring you a glass tableside.

Cheers!
