MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why do we use the term “bucks” for money?

You use the word almost every day… “can I borrow 5 bucks?” “That costs about 10 bucks” But where and why did we start using this term?

The slang term for money “bucks” started being used back in the early 1700s. It refers to deer skins from male deer, or bucks as they are more commonly known.

Way back then in the early times, deer skins were used as an informal currency to trade for goods. The “bucks” term has stuck ever since.
