MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Are the gold medals in the Winter Olympics pure gold?

Winter Olympics still going on over in Beijing and I was wondering last night when Canada beat us in Ice Hockey… are those gold medals even pure gold? The answer is NO! Kind of…

According to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), all gold and silver medals are required to be at least 92.5 percent SILVER in them. The gold in gold medals is in the plating on the outside surface of the medal and must consist of at least 6 grams of pure gold, but the entire thing isn’t all gold.

So sure, still cool to win gold. But that’s like getting a hollow chocolate bunny at Easter.
