MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What on earth is an Ice Box Cake?

The results are in and Connecticut’s favorite dessert is… Ice Box Cake. Wait, what now?

That’s right, one of those wacky Google search articles came out about each state’s favorite dessert. Obviously Ice Cream, Jell-O, and cake were all big winners. But then I got down to Connecticut and saw that ours was “Ice Box Cake” which I had never heard of until today.

After doing some research I found out that it’s basically a layer cake which doesn’t require any baking. It’s just ingredients in a glass dish like wafer cookies, cream, condensed milk, fruit, or whatever else you might want in it. You can customize it any way you want as long as it has the cream-and-cookie base.

The Ice Box name comes from when they started making these back in the early 20th century before mechanical refrigeration was popular. People only had “Ice Boxes” to keep things cold. So that’s what they would use to make the cake cold.

Yum!
