MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why does the McFlurry have that square shaped spoon with the hole in it?

I had a few people email me about this yesterday since it was National Milkshake Day. Wanted to know why the McDonald’s McFlurry’s have such an odd shaped spoon with the square hole in it.

I always assumed it was a straw to drink the rest of the McFlurry when it melts a bit, but that’s not it at all. The reasoning is a lot more practical. That square opening connects to the machine they make the McFlurry with and it acts as an arm for the mixer to swirl it all around creating the frozen treat. Then they just serve it to you as a spoon as well. What a smart idea!
