MUNDANE MYSTERIES: When did the “Gatorade bath” tradition start in football?

Heading into Super Bowl Weekend one of the most known traditions is the winning team dumping the cooler of Gatorade onto the head coach. But when and how did this crazy tradition start?

It actually began right here in the Tri-state! The “Gatorade shower” was first done back in 1984, when New York Giants player Jim Burt decided to drench head coach Bill Parcells with the Gatorade cooler.

After that it became a team tradition where they would get Parcells with Gatorade showers every time they had a big win. After the Giants’ big Super Bowl win in 1986 other teams started to do it too and it stuck ever since.
