MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why are night insects like moths so drawn to lights?

With spring and summer almost here it’s time for all those bugs to fly into your back porch light. But why do they do this? It’s actually quite interesting, and kinda sad in a weird way.

A lot of experts say night insects, such as moths, are attracted to light bulbs because they are actually mistaking them for the light of the moon. Way back before humans and electricity they would navigate the Earth by the light of the moon. So anytime they see an artificial light they think that’s what they’re traveling towards.
