MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why do we use the term “bucks” for money?

You use the word almost every day… “can I borrow 5 bucks?” “That costs about 10 bucks” But where and why did we start using this term?

The slang term for money “bucks” started being used back in the early 1700s. It refers to deer skins from male deer, or bucks as they are more commonly known.

Way back then in the early times, deer skins were used as an informal currency to trade for goods. The “bucks” term has stuck ever since.

Monday January 10, 2022: Life’s Little Luxuries; Too Embarrassed to Return; Dry January

How do you reheat pizza?  The microwave and the oven are the most common methods but Anna’s father (who owns multiple Italian restaurants) has a method that is both remarkably effective and messy!  (:25)

We lost America’s grandma with the passing of Betty White a few weeks ago and now, especially for ‘90’s kids, we’ve all lost a father figure as well.  (2:37)

What do you think are life’s little luxuries?  Anna got the chance to do something luxurious on Friday night that she hasn’t been able to do in weeks, but most people do every day!  (6:06)

Are you taking part in “Dry January”?  Lots of people give up drinking in the first month of the new year, but is it really worth it?  Dr. Jarid Pachter talks to Anna and Raven about whether the potential health benefits outweigh the inconvenience!  (13:31)

It’s nice to have a hobby, especially if you can tie it into your career, but if you spend your free time making this disgusting monstrosity than that’s all I need to know about you!  (16:51)

Have you ever been somewhere and had something embarrassing happen to you?  Was it so embarrassing that you swore you would never go back there?  It happened to Anna’s daughter and she still has never gone back!  (20:34)

Depression is common during middle age, but that’s doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do about it!  Anna and Raven talk to Dr. Paul O’Connor about one unconventional thing you can do to keep the blues away and your teenager might actually be doing it too!  (28:34)

Who would you least like to be stuck in a car with?  Andrew Peters was one of the many people who were stuck on i95 in Virginia last week, but he was also stuck in a situation that didn’t just cost him time!  (32:31)

Mike and Alison’s daughter is a junior in high school and has started looking at colleges. Mike thinks it’s ridiculous that she’s looking at super expensive colleges that are more like country clubs than anything. He would like to give their daughter a choice, she goes to a boutique/overly expensive school, they won’t help pay BUT if she chooses a state school, they will cover expenses. Alison says that isn’t a fair option for a 16-year-old. What do you think? (35:45)

Sheila thinks she’s got what it takes to beat Raven in pop culture trivia!  Can she succeed and win the $300 jackpot?  (44:44)

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Drone helps save a man’s life after suffering heart attack

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Drone helps save a man’s life after suffering heart attack

I can totally relate to this story after spending two hours shoveling my driveway and sidewalk this morning thinking I was about to pass out the whole time.

Over in Sweden they recently launced a fleet of drones that can show up with a defibrillator and help someone who is having a heart attack or medical emergency.

Then in December it was put to the test when a 71-year-old guy collapsed while shoveling snow at his house. The drone took about three minutes to get to the man arriving before paramedics could get there.  Another person at the house grabbed the equipment and zapped him with it saving his life. The man pulled through and has made a full recovery.

Unbelievable!

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Can two snowflakes be exactly alike?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Can two snowflakes be exactly alike?

You’ve heard it for years… “no two snowflakes are exactly alike” but is that even true?

It’s not actually. Back in 1988 a U.S. scientist in Boulder, CO named Nancy Knight found two identical snowflakes while she was studying snow crystals. The flakes were taken from a storm in Wisconsin and she made the discovery using a microscope.

So with this snow storm we had today you might be able to go out there and find two that are the same! Good luck.

Whose side are you on?  (35:06)
