MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Can you eat your Christmas tree?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Can you eat your Christmas tree?

I know, I know, seems like an insane question. But you’ll be surprised by the answer!

Here’s the thing… if you are really in to recycling, you actually can eat your Christmas tree. The needles provide vitamin C. And if your tree comes with pinecones, the pine nuts can be healthy too.

Some Christmas trees are donated to local zoos as food for the animals. Who knew?!

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Jail uses inmates to help dogs get adopted

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Jail uses inmates to help dogs get adopted

This is really a feel good story on so many different levels.

About a year ago this one county jail in Utah started letting inmates spend time with unadoptable dogs. The goal was to have them train the dogs so they would be able to get into a home with a family. So far it’s been a huge success. They had 28 dogs go through the program, and every single one came out of it ready to be adopted!

A few of them even got adopted by inmates after they got released from jail too. What a great idea. Like any story that involved good deeds there were even a few time that the prison guards used their own money to help with the adoption fees. See… giving and positivity is contagious! Love this story.

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What is the white string on a box of animal crackers for?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What is the white string on a box of animal crackers for?

This is a very random one today, but do you remember those old school boxes of animal crackers? The package had that white string on top. I always wondered why? Just a fun handle? To make it easier to hang in the stores? Nope. None of those reasons. It’s actually more festive than that.

Animal crackers were first introduced around Christmas time in 1902, the reason they added the string was for people to use the empty cracker boxes as ornaments on your Christmas tree. How cool! I might have to go pick some up tonight and put them on my tree.

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Company uses their office holiday party to help kids

Every company is looking for a creative idea for their annual holiday party. This waste management company in Oregon may have won them all with this one.

More than 80 employees and their families all got together and assembled bikes for kids during the company’s annual Christmas party this year. They put together over 150 bikes which are now being given to local charities, school districts and programs that help children experiencing homelessness.

What an incredible idea!

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why does Salvation Army collect donations using a red pot?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why does Salvation Army collect donations using a red pot?

It’s that time of year you’ve probably seen the Salvation Army red pots outside the stores lately. But why do they use the red pot?

The first ever Salvation Army collection kettle took place in San Francisco at the Oakland Ferry located at the foot of Market St. It was actually a large crab pot with a sign that read “Keep the Pot Boiling”

So now when you drop in a few coins you know why that pot is red.
