TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Plane crash survivors rescued thanks to iPad

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Plane crash survivors rescued thanks to iPad

We tend to take technology for granted. Using our iPads and smartphones for silly videos and social media. When sometimes it can be life saving.

Like it was for this father and his 12-year-old daughter who survived a small plane crash in eastern Pennsylvania last Sunday. Because they were stranded in them middle of the woods they almost died of hypothermia.  Eventually rescue teams were able to find them all because the daughter had been using an iPad.  They were able to ping her device to figure out their location. Both dad and the daughter were rescued and are doing well now.

Let this be a lesson to always make sure those devices are charged up.

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why is Big Y called “Big Y”?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Why is Big Y called “Big Y”?

I figured with our Food Drive happening today at Big Y in Milford I would make today’s mystery Food Drive related. I was wondering this all morning while I was there… where did the name come from? Big Y? Luckily I got the answer.

Big Y stores were founded in 1936 by two brother, Paul and Gerald D’Amour. The original store was named after an intersection in Chicopee, Massachusetts where two roads converge to form a “Y”.

Ahhhhh… okay that makes sense now.

All these years later, Big Y has almost 80 stores throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts with over 11,000 employees. Incredible.

If you want to read the entire history of Big Y it’s up on their site here

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Texting mix-up leads to a memorable 6 year Thanksgiving tradition

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Texting mix-up leads to a memorable 6 year Thanksgiving tradition

I absolutely love this story.

Six years ago a woman named Wanda Dench thought she was texting her grandson a reminder about coming to thanksgiving dinner. Like we’ve all done at one time or another she texted the wrong number by accident. The person on the other end was a guy named Jamal Hinton.

Naturally, he wrote back “who’s this?” she responded “grandma…” to which he texted back “You not my grandma,”. “Can I still get a plate tho” she then replied “of course!”

Now every year since Jamal has attendee thanksgiving dinner at Wanda’s house and the two have become good friends. They will once again sit down together for the sixth year in a row and have Thanksgiving dinner next week.

Incredible. Cheers to many more!

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: Do people still use payphones?

I can’t remember the last time I used a payphone, but they do still exist it seems. Ever since the inventions of cell phones and smartphones people have stopped looking for coins to call someone.

There are currently about 100,000 useable payphones left in the U.S., One fifth of them are located in New York. For comparison back in 1999 there were two million payphones.
